We’ll ride from Skyway Park in the Town and Country area of Tampa to the south side of the Courtney Campbell Trail, continuing to its western end in Pinellas County, and then head north into Safety Harbor on the new trail extension that runs along Bayshore Dr. Once in downtown Safety Harbor we'll stop for breakfast at a local restaurant.

After breakfast the return ride will split into two groups:

Group 1 will be lead by Margaret, and it will return along the Bayshore and Courtney Campbell trails, reversing the course we came out on. This keeps the majority of the ride on bike trails.

Group 2 will be lead by Joe, and it is only for those who are very adventurous and experienced riders. Joe will head north from Safety Harbor to traverse the northern side of Old Tampa Bay. He'll ride through Phillipe Park and various neighborhoods in Oldsmar and Tampa's Town and Country area, crossing both Hillsborough Avenue and Memorial Highway twice before returning to Skyway Park. This part of the ride will be entirely on roads, some of which are busy.

The Courtney Campbell trail is truly spectacular - and it's great fun to ride. If you like cycling with lots of water views, this ride is for you. Not much shade, though, so bring sunscreen and water. Restrooms are located at the park and midway at the restaurant.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Town and Country area, here are driving directions to the start:

  • From Hillsborough Ave. go south on George Road, cross Independence Blvd., then turn left into Skyway Park.
  • From south of Tampa International Airport or when coming from Pinellas County take Eisenhower Blvd. northbound (there is no need to get on the Veterans Expressway, but follow signs to Exit 3), turn left onto Memorial Highway, left onto George Road, cross Independence Blvd, then turn left into Skyway Park.

Now that the newest section of Tampa's Riverwalk is officially open let's explore some of the amazing bike trails the city has developed. From our start in Seminole Heights we'll catch the Hillsborough River Greenways trail, then ride south to Water Works Park where we pick up the spectacular Riverwalk. We'll ride the Riverwalk in its entirety, then turn north along the Channelside Trail where we'll pick up the Selmon Express trail. The Selmon ends at the beginning of a loop we'll take to explore Palmetto Beach where we'll find the beautiful McKay Bay Trail hidden behind Tampa's Waste-to-Energy facility. Our rest stop is just off the DeSoto Park trail sitting at the edge of McKay Bay. We'll ride back to Tampa via Ybor City, Channelside, Cotanchobee Park and then, do the entire Riverwalk one more time. Our last trail is the Tampa Heights Greenway Trail as we work our way back to our cars. Much of this ride is on bike trails, though we do cross several major highways. Our non-trail riding is on quiet and shady streets where traffic is minimal. No facilities at the start as the Independent usually opens after we've departed. The Shell station, two blocks north on Florida Avenue, is your closest comfort stop before the start of the ride.

For those who want to add 10 miles to the ride, there will be a group riding down from Seminole Heights to the starting location. Call Les (813) 598-4944 if you want to join up with them.

    July 24 - Oldsmar Discovery

    • Meeting Time: 7:30 AM (riders leave promptly at 7:45 AM)
    • Meeting Location: Shelter #5, Philippe Park, 2525 Philippe Parkway, Safety Harbor, FL 34695 (first parking lot/pavilion to the right of the park entrance)

    • Ride Leader: Earl (727) 415-8993
Beginning with an uphill, "warm-up" loop through Philippe Park we will ride around the northern-most shores of Tampa Bay to discover the hidden parks and trails of Oldsmar. Expect one bridge to climb, along with some spectacular waterfront views of Upper Tampa Bay. Oldsmar was named for R.E. Olds, an early automotive pioneer and founder of the REO Motor Car Company, and R.E. Olds Park on the shores of upper Tampa Bay is one of the first areas we'll pass through. Our journey next takes us to Mobbly Beach Park, then to Mobbly Bayou along the Oldsmar Trail, continuing with a loop through Hillsborough County's Upper Tampa Bay Park before we work our way back to our cars. Restrooms at the start and at Upper Tampa Bay Park, our midway point. We'll drive to breakfast after the ride..

July 31 - Upper Tampa Bay Trail

    • Meeting Time: 7:30 AM (riders leave promptly at 7:45 AM)
    • Meeting Location: Peterson Road Park, 8203 Peterson Road, Odessa, Florida 33556
    • Distance: 20 miles
    • Speed: 10-14 mph
    • Ride Leader: John (813) 613-6047
We'll start at the northern-most trailhead and ride south and then southwest to experience the entire trail. This includes going up and over Gunn Highway on the pedestrian/bike bridge as well as looping down and under Linebaugh Avenue before we cross the rustic wooden bridge over Rocky Creek. Part of the trail follows an old railbed, another section circles a now closed landfill, and the southwestern-most section (no shade here, i.e., hot, hot, hot!) follows Channel A as it flows down to Upper Tampa Bay. We'll leave the trail to explore some of the nearby subdivisions, and then repeat the trail ride to cycle back to our cars. Restrooms and water at the start and midway along the route. This is a really pretty trail with lots of variety (sun, shade, twists, tight turns, straight-aways, bridges, water views, etc.) and thus a very popular one. We'll drive to breakfast after the ride.

From the Old Train Depot in Dunedin we will ride north on the Pinellas Trail through Ozona, Palm Harbor and Crystal Beach to Tarpon Springs and then out to beautiful Fred Howard Park and Beach. The Pinellas Trail is considered by many to be Florida's premier trail, and this section its prettiest. The route is scenic and shady, with one pedestrian bridge over Alternate 19 to add a small challenge for your legs. We leave the trail in Tarpon Springs to ride past the sponge docks and Spring Bayou (where the traditional Epiphany cross is thrown). Then we're out over the causeway to the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico at Fred Howard Beach. We'll return to Dunedin via the trail and walk to breakfast at a bike-friendly café after the ride. Restrooms at the train depot and at the beach.

Named after General James A. Van Fleet, a distinguised combat commander in both World Wars and the Korean War, the Van Fleet Trail is considered the most remote trail in Florida. It runs 29.2 miles north from Polk City to Mabel (off Highway 50), with an additional, new section, the Teco Trail, 10 miles south to Auburndale. Because it is a former Seaboard railroad line, the path is straight and flat (i.e., no hills), with just one gentle curve. We will ride about 15 miles north in search of that one curve, and then turn around and return to our start. The majority of the trail runs through the Green Swamp, headwaters for four major rivers: the Hillsborough, Peace, Withlachoochee and the Oklawaha. You won't see many people. You will see cattle ranches, lush forests and wetlands. Depending upon the season of the year you could see wildflowers, birds, butterflies, alligators, turkey, deer, bobcats, gopher tortoises, rabbits, the rare Sherman's squirrel, snakes of every variety, and even alpaca on a farm near Polk City. Restrooms and water a mile from the start, and along the trail. We'll eat after the ride, depending upon what's open along I-4.
